Certification Courses

  • This training class will meet the NFPA 1001 Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications for Firefighter I

  • This training class will meet the NFPA 1001 Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications for Firefighter II

  • This training class will meet the NFPA Standard for Hazardous Materials Qualifications at the Awareness and Operations Level.

Apparatus Programs

  • This three-day course combines a lecture format with practical skills aimed at teaching Firefighters the basics when it comes to pump operations and operating on the fireground as the pump operator. The course includes a discussion on different kinds of fire pumps, apparatus and controls along with hydraulic calculations with two days spent conducting practical evolutions that concentrate on pumping, drafting, water supply and relay pumping.

  • In this training class students will receive lecture and practical skill instruction covering theory, use and troubleshooting of their department’s aerial apparatus. Training will provide instruction to students on the safe and effective operation of aerial fire apparatus. Aerial apparatus within the region will be used to promote interoperability at fire scenes and familiarity of the local apparatus. This program is designed to prepare the student for operating aerial apparatus on the fireground using a thorough knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of the apparatus. This course is customized to the Middlesex County Fire Service and the resources within.

  • This training class will provide instruction to students on the operation of fire apparatus in accordance with the standards established by the Commission on Fire Prevention and Control. At the end of this program, students will participate in a practical skills test and successful completion will allow them to apply to the DMV for a Q Endorsement on their driver’s license.

Hands On Training

  • Does your department experience low staffing on the initial alarm? Would you be required to fulfill the role of numerous positions on the fireground? This class will discuss the opportunities to maximize your personnel on the fireground in order to gain entry into the building and to the fire area. Without proper forcible entry, we can’t access the fire.

  • This two-day training program is designed to reinforce the concepts of basic firefighting skills related to fire containment and extinguishment. Students will discuss all positions within the Engine Company, nozzles, hose loads and line selection. Using skill stations, the program will allow participants to deploy and operate various types of hose lines in multiple settings to establish the fundamental skills of flowing water to extinguish fire. Water supply and master stream operations are also included in this program.

  • This two-day training program is designed to reinforce the concepts of basic firefighting skills related to Truck Company operations on the fireground. Not every department responds with a ladder truck, but every department is required to perform truck company skills. This program dives deep into various truck company skills including ground ladders, power saws, ventilation, forcible entry and search in order to enhance skills of the students in fireground operations to support the engine company

  • Having trouble completing your annual live fire training requirements? Look no further than the MCFS. Our experienced instructors will be able to assist your department with realistic and effective live fire training scenarios that incorporate fire behavior lessons, fire suppression and search and rescue tactics. Students will come away with a better understanding of the coordinated efforts on the fireground between companies and how to operate effectively.

  • This program was developed by MCFS Instructors specifically for operations in the Middlesex County Fire Service. In the initial moments on the fireground, situations can deteriorate quickly. This course refreshes fundamental firefighter skills, and takes an in-depth look at identifying changing conditions, and the equipment and skills associated with self-rescue and Rapid Intervention Teams. This course is designed for the student to make a difference on the fireground to save themselves or a fellow firefighter.

Each of these Topics and Courses as well as others your fire department may need are fully available to be offered for training evening sessions as well.

  • A hot topic in the fire service, this class takes a look at the impact of ventilation on the fireground and the consideration used for decision making in the low staffing, modern fire environment.

  • Ladders are one of the most important pieces of equipment on the fireground. Ladders do no good being left on the rig! This class will take a look at the necessary culture associated with fire service ladders and the skills needed to utilize ladders to be safe and effective on the fireground.

  • This lecture program discusses all the basics of Engine Company work including nozzles, hose loads and hose line selections. Students are engaged in discussion to promote the understanding of initial size-up and tactics employed by the Engine Company. Videos and pictures from local fires to which instructors responded to are used to reinforce concepts.

  • Operating in the roadway is often one of the most overlooked dangers firefighters may face. For departments that respond to highways and busy roadways, this class discusses all the methods available to keep our responders safe while managing the flow of traffic around the emergency scene.
